About Central Conservatory of Music
Established as National College of Music in 1940 and merged from different music educational institutions in China afterwards, Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM) is an institution for training high level musical specialists. As the only one of the universities in Fine Arts in China listed in the "211 project", Central Conservatory of Music now consists of departments and colleges of Musicology, Composition, Conducting, Piano, Voice and Opera, Orchestral Instruments, and Traditional Chinese Musical Instruments, Music Education, Orchestra Academy, Science and Technology (including Electro-Acoustic Music Center, Institute of Music Therapy, Violin Making Center, Voice Research Center), Musicology Institute, Music Education College for Distant Learning, Continuing Education College, Primary and Middle school. The Conservatory has 389 teaching staffs including 52 PhD supervisors, 207 master supervisors, 119 professors and 223 associate professors. Currently enrolled 2022 full-time students, including 1463 undergraduate students, 426 graduate students, 97 doctoral students, 8 post-doctoral candidates, 28 international students, 5971 students in the Music Education College for Distance Learning, Continuing Education College 934 students in the attached middle school and primary school.
The Central Conservatory of Music is one of first institutions which could confer doctoral degree in China, and the first post-doctoral station among the Academies of Fine Arts in China permitted by Academic Degrees Committee, Human Resources Department of the State Council and Ministry of Education in 2001, and the Musicology Institute of CCOM was set up in 2003, which is the only key Institute of Humanities and Social Science belonged to Ministry of Education among the Academies of Fine Arts in China. Orchestra Academy was established in 2005, the first of its kind in Asia for training the orchestra players specially. The Social Music Grade Examination Committee held grade examination home and abroad in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of China. The CCOM also has is own Press and Beijing Universal Audiovisual Press. As one of the Centre for music education, research, composition, performance and promotion in China, Central Conservatory of Music has become a university representing the high level of professional music education in China.
Central Conservatory of Music is a place for many young music students to dream of. During past 70 years, a strong team of faculties and administrative staffs has been established. Many of them are specialist and scholar in their fields. More than 10 thousands of young musicians and hundreds of international students have graduated from the CCOM, many of them have become international renowned composer, musicologist, music educator, performer and leader of institutions.
